PAYING HOMAGE WITH A NEW REIMAGINED GLOBAL COLLABORATION HONOURING THE EARLY 2000S ELECTRONIC MERENGUE SOUND FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THEIR CAREERS
Today, a special collaboration is born from two superstar artists. Marshmello and Manuel Turizo pioneer a new level in global music collaborations debuting a one-of-a-kind cross-genre track celebrating electronic music and merengue. The prolific Grammy-nominated artist and producer, Marshmello, joins forces with the young top-charting Latin artist, composer and phenomenon, Manuel Turizo, to release a joint single “El Merengue,” which pays homage to the merengue electrónico music from the early 2000s. It arrives today alongside a new music video which features both stars. Watch the video for “El Merengue” HERE.
The two artists revealed the mega collaboration in the heart of New York City’s bustling Times Square last Friday (February 24) when one of the most recognisable heads in music, the Marshmello helmet, appeared on the subway and in the busy city streets. When the clock struck 5pm ET, the iconic helmet was lifted to reveal Manuel Turizo. The fans mobbed the Colombian heartthrob causing pandemonium and excitement as the duo, remotely on IG Live and in-person, announced the brand new single highlighted across seven surrounding Billboards.
That evening, Marshmello continued teasing his current wave of Spanish music collaborations during his EDC Mexico headline set in Mexico City, where the inventive DJ, producer and artist debuted another unreleased track featuring Mexican artists Fuerza Regida and Peso Pluma. The fans are left to speculate after Marshmello recently revealed that he’s “Working on myself…and a new album…” via his Instagram.
The release of “El Merengue” follows Manuel Turizo’s worldwide hit single ‘La Bachata,’ which has proven to be a hit by entering the following Billboard charts: Billboard Hot 100 chart for 21 weeks (#67 peak position), Billboard Global 200 for 33 weeks (#6 peak position), Hot Latin Songs for 34 weeks (#5 peak position), Tropical Airplay for 10 weeks at number one (remained on the chart for 40 weeks) and Latin Airplay for 1 week at number one (remained on the chart for 38 weeks). In addition, the song was in Spotify’s Top 50 for 31 weeks (peaking at number three) with over 969M audio streams and 403M views. This week, Turizo has two songs on Billboard’s top 10 Latin Airplay chart, which featured ‘La Bachata’ at number two and ‘Éxtasis’ at number eight.
The official music visual for “El Merengue,” directed by Chadrick Preuss and Sandeep Vadlamudi, showcases Turizo reminiscing about his ex-girlfriend just before spotting her in the crowd of a nightclub. With some liquid courage, Turizo acts on impulse to approach her and the two ex-flames dance together in a haze over the smooth merengue electrónico beat — or is it all a dream? When the night closes, Turizo is consumed by emotion, but his friend Marshmello consoles him and the two head out.
The video scenes detail Turizo’s “El Merengue” lyrics composed by Manuel Turizo, Marshmello, Edgar Barrera, Julián Turizo, Miguel Andres Martinez Perea, Carolina Isabel Colón Juarbe, Nicolas Jose Cotton and Juan Diego Medina Vélez. The song was produced by Marshmello, Nico Cotton, Slow Mike and Edgar Barrera.
The collaboration also follows Marshmello’s sensational release, “Numb” featuring Khalid which peaked at number three on Billboard’s US Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart. “El Merengue” explores the genre of Electronic Merengue for the first time.
